In Texas, rainwater harvesting is encouraged for several reasons. We at Shed And Water encourage it because the rainwater running down your roof actually belongs to you! Collecting it for later use lessens the burden on municipal supply and storm drainage. If only 5% of Texans collected rainwater from their homes' roofs, it would amount to over 50 million gallons per year!
Though East Texans receive an average annual rainfall of 40 inches, it's not uncommon to go up to 50 days between rainfall events. In those periods, having a reserve of rainwater can ensure our plants aren't defeated by drought, without burdening the municipal supply.
When a shed or greenhouse is installed in a location that compliments your landscape and lifestyle, it makes tremendous sense to utilize that roof surface to harvest water for things like watering plants (especially in hydroponic or aeroponic gardens), cleaning garden equipment, or rinsing dirty hands. A 12x16 structure will yield approximately 100 gallons of water per inch of rain. Our systems can be as small as 50 gallons, but we typically don't suggest employing a tank greater in capacity than 500 gallons.
We don't usually recommend using rainwater for drinking, especially if your home is already served by municipal supply. However, if your property isn't served by municipal water supply, we can design a system to provide potable rainwater to your dwelling.
